Oil is still pumped today through the five artificial islands in the Mackenzie River. There are no roads out of Normon Wells, supplies are brought in by air and barge in the summer and ice road during winter.
Situated on the Mackenzie River at 65°17'N and 126°50'W, 80 km northwest of Fort Norman and 684 km northwest of Yellowknife. About 90 miles below the arctic circle and it left an indelible impression, just trying to imagine how animals surviving winters of minus 40 took some doing.
It was the first town I've been to where locals can leave their houses unlocked.
Normon Wells sits alongside the Mackenzie River just about on the Arctic Circle.
Its traditional name, Tlegohli means “Where There is Oil,”
