MY PAINTING BACKGROUND

Despite being encouraged to paint destroying my Fathers's precious guache in the process, years passed before really painting.

My first real job was a scientist at the Meterological Office in a small research station outside Bracknell.

It wasn't long before I started in the film industry, drawn in by the sounds of The Who, Genisis and The Moody Blues rehearsing in the studios. I got a job starting out sweeping stage floors and working my way up to assisting sculptors and scenic artists.  During the 1970's, Shepperton saw the emergence of a new wave of directors. Ridley and Tony Scott,  Hugh Hudson, Lester Bookbinder, Howard Guard. Shepperton was also home for commercials like Cadbury's Smash Martians,  P G Tips Chimpanzees, Henekin, Frys Turkish Delight along with films like Alien and Flash Gordon. The Who leased the Old House and stored their road gear in I Stage.

Art direction involves visualising the brief for the director, DoP with working drawings for the construction crew and props buyers. One learnt on the job but my saving grace was an "O" Level in Technical Drawing and oddly, Celestial Navigation. Combined they provided skills for drafting out and fluency in 3D space. That and really top-notch construction crew got me out of trouble on many an occasion.
It was only in the early 2000's I  started tutoring painting realising as one gets older and grumpier film wasn't the place to be. Having a steady income without the stress always wondering when the next job would come allowed space to pursue one's own ideas instead of someone elses.
The inciting incident was being given some dry pigments, catching the moment before they were to be thrown away.

It was some years before beginning to really understand in their relationship as to what art really means, became apparent. 
It was only in 2023 attending a master class run by Sir Graham Sydney it really started and that was after beginning to understand what my visit to Alaska in 2018 really was about. Talk about a late developer!
